KCSN Best in LA Mag

Print E-mail

(July 30 - 6:40 a.m.) The Best of LA issue of Los Angeles Magazine is out and invariably they proclaim a local radio station the best in some category. This year is no exception. The Best Americana Radio Station is KCSN:

“With shows like Americana Matinee, Tangled Roots, and Bluegrass Etcetera, the weekend lineup on KCSN was for years the best place to hear Americana music on the radio. As of March, the station has gotten even better. The weekday format has switched from classical to triple A playing rock, pop, alternative, and country – and not just the hits – a format that has struggled to find a home on commercial radio in our city. Classic Springsteen, Leonard Cohen and Johnny Cash, followed by new Jakob Dylan and Norah Jones, without commercials/ There’s nowhere else on the dial you’re going to hear that.”

When I think of the incredible talent that came out of San Fernando Valley State College, and California State University @ Northridge, it is a shame to see this use of a frequency with THAT Music. The State should consider selling all their Radio properties, and re open all the closed State Offices on Fridays!

One of the overlooked aspects of American Radio is the lack of exposure of a Great American treasure: American roots music. KCSN is helping to show us that the soul of America is American roots music. KCSN is helping to show us that too much talk radio is a mindless commercial excuse to run ads. Good Rock Music knows its roots. Commercial radio stations can still sell ads if their DJs are musicoligists and teachers. Lame resticted computerized playlists are not more effective than intelligent human beings. To paraphrase John Prine: your flag decal may not get you into heaven anymore, but great American roots music can get you pleasure here on planet Earth as true patriots having better orgasms. When discourse is dumbed down by untrue attack ads spewing hate, radio helps the enemies of America. Music can touch us in ways that make us better Americans. KCSN shows us that Radio is America at its best through roots music. We are all in this together. Radio. Roots Music. Love. Peace. Fun.
