kevinandbean(July 27, 2010) For two decades Kevin & Bean have delivered as one of the most outstanding, funny, irreverent and always fun morning shows in the history of LA Radio. Last month the KROQ morning team was far and away the #1 in morning drive in the coveted 25-54 demographic, as well as scoring with other listeners, #1 18-34 and #2 12+ behind Bill Handel.

Kevin & Bean were voted #7 Best On-Air LARP of 2010 by a group of their local radio peers. They have been involved in headline grabbing, word-of-mouth skits and bits ranging from an event later included on Unsolved Mysteries, Singles Weekends in Las Vegas, and having entertainment reporter and entertainer Ralph Garman playing characters and voices of the famous and near famous.

The pair can boast of surrounding themselves with an excellent cast of characters that includes Garman, Lisa MayPsycho MikeDoc on the ROQ, “The King of Mexico” Dave Sanchez, DJ Omar Khan and producer Alex Warren. Kevin & Bean can also boast an impressive supporting cast from the past, including Jimmy KimmelAdam CarollaMatt “Money” Smith, and Virgin Kennedy.

Gene Baxter (Bean) and Kevin Ryder (Kevin) met while at KZZP-Phoenix in 1988. They did some on-air work together on Saturday nights while in Phoenix, which gave them the idea of a two-man show. KROQ pd Andy Schuon teamed them in early 1990, resulting in their enormous success.

Some comments from those who voted for Kevin & Bean:

  • “Still going strong!”
  • “Bean once worried about being ‘a 40-year-old morning guy on KROQ. Fifty is just around the corner and they’re still young, irreverent, and fresh.”
  • “The Gold standard.”
  • “Still consistently the funniest morning show in LA radio.”
  • “Funny, topical and still have sky-high hip factor.”
  • “Ridiculously consistent.”
  • “The most amazing team with Ralph Garman, Lisa May, Doc, and Psycho Mike. What is more amazing is that Kevin & Bean let them shine in the spotlight.”
  • “Every year seems to top the last year with staying on target and delivering.”

Spanish Radio is a HUGE competitor, Maria...look around. If you still don't think K&B are irreverent, then you haven't been listening...the only thing keeping the crew from being themselves is Mr. Weatherly - and he gets called on repeatedly for that...

Every one who hates on kevin and bean are idiots! They are the best talent in radio as of right now. Ralph is purely genius and Lisa delivers the womens point of view that is needed in that show which is mostly male based.if you do not find the kevin and bean show funny than you are not relevant with the times they are the best and hope they add more talking and less kroq music!

Man I thought the article was going to give me the good news that they had been taken off the air. I CANT STAND THESE 2 THEY ANNOY ME SOOOOOOO MUCH. I'm glad I have moved on from their morning show. Lisa May thinks she owns the show and just starts nagging at them like if she was their wife or mother she annoys me also. Its been 10 yrs since I stopped listening to KROQ and I have never looked back . I'm glad I moved on from them I wish Stern would be back so he can know them out of their spot..

I have a feeling that if Howard Stern were still around they wouldn't be #1

Kevin and Bean are great for two reasons. The first is that (and their staff) they are very funny. Second, they are actually very intelligent and show intelligence helps out comedic bits.

I have never listened to Kevin and Bean a single time in my life. However I can't knock their their success. But I do agree with Maria that there really is no competition in morning radio. Half the population is listening to Spanish radio and the other half is spread across mediocre English speaking babble. No wonder ipods are so successful.

Kevin & Bean do well in the L.A. ratings by default. Think about it, who else is their competition? Mark Brian, who are even more old and tired? Kevin and Bean should thank their lucky stars for Ralph Garman, the only entertaining part of their show. Kevin & Bean have not been young, irreverent or fresh in years! If Kevin Weatherly is smart, he's already searching for Kevin & Bean's much younger and more talented replacements.

I had the honor of working in the same building (Venice & Fairfax) with the Kevin and Bean crew. Great talents backed up by a great programmer, Kevin Weatherly, and you get a 7.7 share P25-54! Radio is still a great media when done right! If you are a young person looking into a radio career, your time will be well spent listening to KROQ.
