Bob Moore responded to the Open Email about the state of KABC. His email was swift and curt: “Don, mark down today’s date (7.14) and call me in 90 days. That’s when you will say, what a difference KABC has made.”
Stern, Leykis, Carolla = radio improved when they left it. They're all yesterday's news. No right-wing bore fests, but a host who knows topical, local issues. It's not asking so much.
I hope you're not trying to sell the notion that the guys named were "right wing"!!! That would be too hysterically over the top. I CAN agree that a local issue oriented host would be nice.

How did radio improve when Stern and Leykis left? They made the stations they worked for a lot of money. They may not be your taste, but they were great entertainers who had a large following of listeners. Who else in radio that doesn't do political talk can you say that about? Add more substance to your point.

KABC needs to go younger and get more edge. Leykis?? Maybe in 1989. In this day and age, you need to attract over the air listeners, podcast junkies and stream listeners. One guy who is def taking it in a new direction is Brett Winterble (sp?) at the Covert Radio Show, edgy and ahead of the news curve and oh yeah, he isn't 65+
Anakin, It's sad to say, but you are absolutely right. Just think... On top of all this Vin Scully is going to retire at the end of the 2010 season. Then Dodgers radio will really go down the crapper.
This is a sham! The Dodgers are going to be on KABC for the next 55 days and currently the Dodgers are playing horribly.Which means even less people will tune into KABC,which gives the programming guru's an out when the next ratings are released
Moore and Silver have proved they can make good radio and hit the demo's advertisers want to buy. What I would like to see is to move HF&F to afternoons, put the real and original Michael Jackson back on 9 to noon, and Leykis in afternoon drive.
I am not sure why I am giving this great free advice because the desert nomad (Suleman) stole my equity in the company and gave it to JPM Chase.
What a difference KABC has made in letting Michael Linder go, but not a good difference. Mr. Linder earned two of the four Golden Mike awards that KABC's news department received last year (http://www.kabc.com/article.asp?id=1627199) and put some much-needed content into KABC's news coverage. Apart from the occasional contributions from stringer Richard Santiago, KABC's news sounds like old-fashioned "rip 'n' read."
I'm not looking forward to management's next bright idea...
Adam Carolla has recently been noting Jack Silver's programming instincts from his 3+ years at KLSX. Adam, Teresa and Bald Brian all remember Jack Silver telling them to avoid Joel McHale as a guest, and that Zach Galifiniakis was "not funny."
Two of the biggest names in comedy today, McHale is playing Carnegie Hall soon with his standup act, and his TV series is a smash hit. Zach took off in "The Hangover" and is co-starring in the upcoming "Due Date" with Robert Downey, Jr. So, there is the evidence of Silver's "programming instincts."
So then there WILL be changes at KABC? That's great! I like where things have headed lately. KABC screwed up losing Tim Conway to KFI. He's perfect in that time slot. Just like Joe Crummy used to be. As for Leykis being under contract 'til 2012, I imagine CBS would be happy to accept a buyout if the money made sense. Tom knows radio better than anyone I know, and knows how to shape his show for any demographic. I listen to Frosty Heidi and Frank every day, but can't turn off KABC fast enough after they are done. Hannity? No. Levin? No. Partisan politics shows are a snore. Entertain me, don't preach to me. (I'm 43)
I don't remember a smarter Leykis, though the concept sounds interesting. The only Leykis I know is the one of cartoonish bravado on-air and while I certainly understand the format- I studied under Sabo, too- unless they're planning on making KABC the new KLSX,that Leykis wont fit. I heard Jack Silver called a lot of things in the 5 years I worked at KLSX and yes, 'genius' was one of them. Sure, there was a parade of brokered weekend programming (I used to joke about having a cyanide tablet that I would consider taking when I was working on one of the more awful infomercials. Toward the end of my tenure at KLSX, I wore a cyanide tablet candy necklace) but it's hard to turn away money when every plastic surgeon who performs breast enlargements also thinks he'd be good on the air and is waving a check. I will be watching the countdown clock to see if "That’s when you will say, what a difference KABC has made” was a prophetic statement or just an oddly constructed sentence.
Randy, anyone who remembers Leykis from his stint at KFI, in the late 80s and early 90s, would recall a very entertaining politically driven show. Despite his "Professor" persona, the man is well-read and well-versed in the important topics of the day. He can also talk from the point of view of an Angelino, having lived here for so long.
Say what you will about the man, this is exactly what KABC needs. That being said, he's still under contract making a move like that unlikely.
Being just a consumer of LA radio and not employed within it, I know my thoughts are worth less than two cents. But, here they are for both Mr. Moore and other LA radio programmers. Live is better than tape EVERY time. That is the problem with the late afternoon programming on KRLA. It is 10+ hours old when presented and the world can and will change in the middle. Next, local is better than national programming. There is a place for it, but keep it local and it become more applicable to the listener. Finally, place entertainers on the radio. Whether is be a talk show host that is engaging and/or presents engaging guests or has such a great personality that does not allow the listener to push the next button. I have the opportunity to listen to XM with its limited good personalities. Present something that is "must listen to radio" so that I want to stay in the car and listen.
Silver needs to swallow his pride and bring the Regular Guys back to L.A. airwaves. They are syndicated, so money and commitment are an issue only for Moore and Silver and KABC.
Making Frosty, Heidi & Frank pay for their airtime, and the Moe Ansari Show, are two elephants in the room.
Radio being what it is, I would not be surprised if Don called Bob Moore at the end of the 90 day period, and Moore was looking for a job.
Yes, let's see if Jack Silver comes up with some creative programming--i.e., NOT Tom Leykis! Having him on KABC would be the final nail in the coffin. KABC was a powerhouse from the late '60s through the mid-1990s because of its intelligence and the diversity of topics that were covered. It has gone downhill over the past ten years because it covers nothing but politics, and that only from the right-wing perspective. (Add to that the immaturity of the shrieking Mark Levin and the smirking FH&F and John Phillips.) I talked to Ray Briem about a year ago, and he said, "KABC was always in the top five in the ratings--and now they're 26th! 26th!!" Wonder what he'd say about the latest ratings, now that they're 29th?
